"Women in peacekeeping"

Goma (Republic democratic of the Congo), 29 May, 2009 _ The 16 operations currently underway have 91,842 personnel -- 79,147 troops, 10,314 police and 2,381 military observers, drawn from 118 countries. It is 61 years since UN peacekeepers were first deployed – in the Middle East, to monitor the armistice between Israel and its Arab neighbours. Easily recognisable by their blue helmets or berets, these forces have since been deployed 63 times, of which 16 missions are ongoing, with a number of differing mandates and sometimes under the control of other large coalitions such as NATO, the AU, ECOWAS or the EU.
