"Africa Cultural and Biological Diversities"

Foumban (Cameroon), 22 May 2009_ So often “Africa” is referred to as a whole, a place struggling with a multitude of problems, one lagging behind the rest of the world and almost backward in its outlook. This is not the case for many situations; Africa is no more one flat, homogeneous cultural area than “Europe”; with its multitude of distinct geographical and topological regions, and nations comprised of many independent and unique cultural and ethnic groups, Africa is vividly diverse. It has a long and illustrious history and its' cultures and peoples contributions to the world, while often overlooked, cannot be forgotten.

Since Alma Ata Declaration: "Counting Malaria out"

Bamako (Mali), 25 April, 2009_ No much time left since the United Nationa Secretary  General Ban Ki Moon and The Roll Back Malaria Fund have set for Malaria to be eradicated from the continent of Africa by December 31st 2010. Monumental dates are so close to the parallel date of 2015, by which time the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are meant to have been achieved, as well as Alma Ata decalration.

"ACTs for Africa"

Oslow (Norway) 17 April 2009_ The combined programme, launched by the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and malaria, DFID, UNITAID and Roll Back Malaria among others, is called the Affordable Medicines Facility for malaria (AMFm). It is designed to reduce the cost of ACTs, or artemisinin combination therapies, the most effective antimalarial drugs available to date, and to increase their use, while reducing the use of less effective treatments. The 2-year pilot project is being launched in 11 countries, 10 in Sub-Saharan Africa and Cambodia.

"Combing drugs to fight against malaria"

Geneva (Switzerland), 20 May 2009_ The newest of these treatments are the Artemisinin combination therapies (ACTs). Artemisinin- derived drugs are administered in combination with other malaria drugs, which act to kill the virus in different ways. It is hoped by doing this, resistance will take longer to emerge as the parasite is being killed in a number of ways, so even if the strain is tolerant to one of the therapies, the combination should mean that one of the other drugs will have an effect.

"AFFORDABLE MEDICINES FOR AFRICA"

Addis Ababa - 25 April 2009 _ Around US$225 million has been pledged to the facility. But with economic crisis taking its toll on many Western nations, aid budgets have been one of the areas hardest hit, and we cannot be sure that any extra funding will be set aside, or even that the amounts already promised will in fact be paid over in full and reach the budget for the new programme – even though some 250 million courses of ACTs are needed by 2010.
